Guidelines for Choosing and Setting Up Your Display Name

When adding a new phone number to your WhatsApp Business account via Facebook Business Manager, assigning an appropriate display name is crucial. This name is required to generate a certificate, without which the WhatsApp Business API won’t function.

Once your business verification is complete and your display name is approved, you’ll unlock higher messaging and phone number limits. Meta may also replace your phone number with the display name when sending messages via WePOS. However, please note that the decision to display your name instead of your number is entirely handled by Meta.

Making Changes to Your Display Name

If you wish to change your display name after it has been submitted for review, the new name must undergo the approval process before it becomes active.

Key Principles for Display Names

Your display name must comply with Meta’s guidelines and align with your business identity. Follow these principles to avoid errors and ensure seamless approval:

  1. Adherence to WhatsApp Policies

Your display name must comply with WhatsApp Commerce and Business policies.
Examples:

  • Accepted: ABC Wine Glasses
  • Not Accepted: ABC Wine

If your business operates multiple divisions, only those compliant with WhatsApp policies may have a separate business account.

  1. Accurate Representation

Your display name should clearly represent your business, services, products, or departments.
Examples:

  • Accepted: Fresh Produce Test
  • Not Accepted: Fashion (too generic)

Names of individuals, slogans, or locations are not permitted. Organizations with government affiliations may require additional approval.

  1. Consistency with Branding

Your display name must match your branding as seen on external platforms, such as your website or marketing materials.
Examples:

  • Accepted: Fresh Produce Cold Pressed Juices (matches external branding)
  • Not Accepted: FP Cold Pressed Juices (inconsistent abbreviation)
  1. Clear Association with Your Business

Your display name must demonstrate a direct relationship with your business. If unclear, use formats like:

  • Accepted: Fruit Snacks by Fresh Produce
  • Not Accepted: Fruit Snacks (without evidence of ownership or association)

Avoid including names of third-party agencies in your display name.

  1. Correct Formatting

Ensure proper formatting to avoid rejection.
Examples:

  • Accepted: New City Computers
  • Not Accepted: NEW CITY COMPUTERS (unless your branding uses all caps)

Formatting Rules for Display Names

Follow these rules to avoid formatting errors:

  • Use grammatically correct capitalization.
  • Match the spacing of your business name (e.g., “Lil’Cupcakes” vs. “Lil’ Cupcakes”).
  • Avoid adding unnecessary punctuation, emojis, or symbols (e.g., ™, @).
  • Permitted additions (e.g., country, department, or “Test/Demo”) must be appropriately capitalized.

Names must have at least 3 characters and should not be in URL format (e.g., “FreshProduce.com” is not allowed).

Additional Notes

If your display name is rejected or flagged, review Meta’s guidelines and make the necessary changes to align with the policies.
